St. Luke Yard Sale

May 13 and 14

In past years, the St. Luke Yard Sale has been a great success!  Ironically, this has been due in part to a lot of work from a few people.  This year, we need your help!  Starting next Sunday, May 1, we will have a sign-up sheet in the narthex.  Please consider helping us with sorting and pricing during the week of May 9 and/or on our sale days May 13 and 14.  Donations will be accepted and volunteers are needed Monday, May 9 and Tuesday, May 10 from 6:00-9:00pm, Wednesday, May 11 from 1:00-9:00pm, and Thursday, May 12 from 1:00-7:00pm.  Help is also needed the days of the sale, Friday, May 13 from 7:00am-4:00pm and Saturday, May 14 from 7:00am-2:00pm.  Please consider donating a few hours during the week to help us make this year’s sale another success.  We accept all items big or small; we do request that all clothing be brought in on hangers.  We could also use donations of grocery bags.  Questions?  Feel free to contact either Lisa Furstenau or Sherry Lesnik.

Relay for Life

St. Luke members Lisa  Furstenau and Kelli Mitchell are participating in the Woodgrove area Relay for Life on June 17-18.  Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society’s national signature activity where teams honor cancer survivors and remember those who have died from the disease while taking turns walking/running around a track in the hope that cancer will one day be eliminated.  If you would like to sponsor Lisa and/or Kelli, your donation is fully tax-deductible.  You may write a check to the American Cancer Society (your cancelled check serves as your receipt), or you may make a donation on-line at www.acsevents.org/relay/il/woodgrove  Lisa and Kelli deeply appreciate your support!

The CE Committee meets the first Tuesday of every month at 7:30pm, typically in the Mural Room.  All who are interested in attending are welcome.  If you are not on the CE committee, we would love to see you, but encourage you to please call Eileen Miller prior to the meeting to confirm location and time.

Teacher Breakfast

All AIF teachers are invited to a Teacher Breakfast on May 22 at 8:45am.  Give us feedback on what worked and what didn’t, any suggestions for future rotations, and your overall impressions of the past year in AIF.  We’ll be talking about the plans for the 2005-2006 Sunday School calendar, as well as some potential changes to the program.  We will have a recognition of all those involved in teaching during the church service on May 22.

Summer Sunday School

In a few weeks, we will be posting our Summer Sunday School sign-up sheet.  Typically, because there are so many activities and vacations scheduled during the summer months, we have fewer children in Sunday School and thus combine classes.  We would particularly like to encourage those members who don’t teach during the school year to try teaching a Sunday during the summer.  This is a one-Sunday commitment (as opposed to four Sundays during the school year), and your assistance would allow those who regularly teach AIF to have a break.  As summer is such a busy time, please feel free to e-mail or call Eileen Miller, Chris Collins, or Barb Bollenberg if you have a specific summer Sunday that you would like to teach.  We will fill your name in on the calendar prior to posting.  If, two weeks prior to a given Sunday, no one has signed up to teach, we will cancel Sunday School and children will remain in church with their parents.  We have adopted this approach because last-minute recruiting is so difficult in the summer when Christian Education Committee members and many church members may be out of town.  If we need to cancel Sunday School, an announcement will be placed in the bulletin.  Please sign up early; let’s work together to continue Sunday School throughout the summer months!

SOS to Travel to Rosebud Indian Reservation

in South Dakota

This summer, some of our Senior Highs will travel to the Rosebud Indian Reservation in south Dakota to do mission work.  The Senior Highs will be selling stock in the mission trip along with various other fund raisers over the next few months.  The kids would really appreciate your support!

Stronghold

The CE Committee would like to thank everyone who participated in making this year’s All-Church Retreat such a wonderful experience.  So many people lent a helping hand that we were able to offer a wider variety of activities.  One reminder—if you went on the Retreat, but have not contributed for Saturday night’s dinner ($2 for kids, $3 for adults), please leave your money in one of the CE Elder’s mailboxes.  Thank you!

Another Summer of VBS Fun!

For those of you planning summer schedules and activities, mark your calendar now for Vacation Bible School, to be held Monday-Friday, August 8-12, from 9:00-11:30am daily.  This year’s exciting theme is The Serengeti Trek: Where Kids Are Wild About God!  Enrollment is open for children aged 3 (by 1/1/05) through those entering 5th grade.  Everyone is welcome to join this committee; we extend a special invitation to our new confirmands to join in the planning of this program.

Attached to this edition of the Lukan Letter, you will find a Vacation Bible School registration form.  You may complete the form and return it with payment to Lori Mosby, Chris Collins or Eileen Miller.  Also, we will have a VBS registration table set up in the rotunda on May 15, May 22 and June 12.  We would like to have all church members who would like to participate registered by June 12.

Our VBS volunteer sign-up sheet will be on the bulletin board in Heller Fellowship Hall beginning May 12; we are looking for adult and student (entering 6th grade in the fall or older).  Your participation would be greatly appreciated!

Again this year, we are using recyclables in our VBS program.  We are collecting cylinder-shaped cardboard or paper boxes such as oatmeal or cornmeal canisters.  Lemonade or iced-tea containers will also work, but coffee cans or other all-metal cans will not.  Please include the lids with the containers.  There will be a collection box in Heller Hall beginning May 15.

Our next VBS planning meeting will be held Tuesday, June 14 at 7:30pm in the Mural Room.

Work Continues, June 5 Set For Progress Report

The intensive work of gathering information to provide architect David Schultz and his team with input regarding St. Luke’s proposed renovation program continues.  Immediately following worship on Sunday, June 5, Schultz will give the congregation a progress report and provide preliminary drawings.  (See the May 1 edition of the Kairos Times for further information.)

In April, two cottage meetings were conducted to gather further feedback from congregation members; additionally, the Omega Capital Sub-Committee began gathering information on possible funding sources and ways to conduct a capital campaign.  In addition, members of the Omega, Sanctuary and Property Committees met with Schultz to clarify information from both the congregational and ministry surveys.  Schultz will be working during May to form preliminary proposals based on St. Luke’s priorities and guidance.

Forums for discussion and meetings with the architect will continue following the June 5 informational meeting.
