We Care, We Share, We Advocate

As a community of concerned Christians reaching out to and caring for all God's children, St. Luke is very involved in mission and community ministries. We are focused on support of and advocating for the poor, oppressed and disadvantaged.

Our programs to support the homeless and those in need are reflections of this priority. We have shown particular support, financially and publicly, for human rights causes. Most recently, the congregation and Session voted to support the right for a living wage for the Immokalee Indian migrant workers in Florida.

We also run a Warming Center site in the winter months and help staff a P.A.D.S. (Public Action to Deliver Shelter) overnight shelter. During the summer 2009, St. Luke hosted a Wednesday overnight shelter during July and August.

Our outreach activities include:
  • Sunshine Committee and Helping Hands
  • Public Action to Deliver Shelter
  • Shelter (P.A.D.S.) - Saturday Warming Center
  • Erie House and FISH food pantries
  • CROP Walk
  • Blanket Sunday/Diaper Sunday
  • Christmas Gifts to Needy
  • Habitat for Humanity
  • Heifer Project
  • Helping Hands
  • Interchurch Refugee and Immigration Ministry
  • Night Ministry
  • One Great Hour of Sharing
  • Two Cents Meal
  • Walk in Ministry
  • Participation in a number of community outreach agencies

Bread for World Letter Writing Campaign

Bread for the World is a collective Christian voice urging our nation's decision makers to end hunger at home and abroad. Working through churches, campuses and other organizations, Bread for the World engages more people in advocacy.  Each year, they invite churches and groups across the country to take up an Offering of Letters to Congress on an issue important to hungry people.

The 2010 Offering of Letters Campaign is focused on asking Congress to adopt changes to the U.S. tax policy that will benefit low-income families.

The Mission Committee is inviting our congregation to write personal letters to urge our members of Congress to protect and strengthen key tax credits that can make a big difference for low-income workers and their families.  The Earned Income Tas Credit (EITC) alone lifts more than 5 milion Americans annually above the poverty line, incuding 2.6 million children. On a low-income budget, food is often the most flexible item.  Rent, transportation, child care, utilities are fixed expenses. So food is one place a struggling family cuts corners.

This outpouring of concern will send a powerful message to our political leaders. Join us in Heller Hall after churchSunday, May 16, or May 23, to write your letter!  Download a smaple letter here.
